Ralph Kuncl, newly appointed chief executive officer at the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Maryland’s Annapolis Symphony Orchestra has appointed Ralph Kuncl as chief executive officer, effective April 1, 2024. He succeeds Interim Executive Director Barbara Randolph, who served in that role beginning in November 2022. Kuncl goes to the ASO following a career as a physician scientist at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and as an executive at research universities, colleges, and nonprofits. He is emeritus president of the University of Redlands in California, and was previously provost/executive vice president at the University of Rochester in New York (that role included oversight of the Eastman School of Music). He had oversight of the Conservatory of Music in Redlands, California, and was a liaison/major supporter of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra, which has received financial and practical business subvention from the University for over 30 years. Kuncl’s 23 years as an amateur vocal performer in the Baltimore Choral Arts Society continues to propel his interest in performance, including appearances with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra. José Luis Novo is the Annapolis Symphony’s artistic director and conductor.
